Talk with a Wizz – Career Choices

Written: March,2011

Choosing which field to pursue a college/university degree in is not only a difficult decision, but it is also one of the most important decisions teenagers/young adults will have to make.

I was faced with this dilemma when all of my friends left for medical school after our first year of university. I decided medicine was not for me and I ended up doing chemistry because it came naturally to me, and a good friend of mine was studying it at the time.

This turned out to be one of the biggest mistakes I could have ever made. Having a degree should never be just for the sake of having a degree, unless you have no need to work. And in all honesty, most of us do need to work. So make sure you study a field that you enjoy, something you can see yourself doing for a long time, with the opportunity to earn a good living from it.

Some people know what they want to do from they’re 5 years old, some when they’re 16, but most people find out a little later like I did.It wasn’t until I was practically finished with university, I started getting into computer programming and web development and I realized computer science is what I should be doing.

The most important thing is to explore all your options, you don’t want to wake up a couple of years from now and be mad at the world, because you chose a field that you hate, and this is what happens to a lot of people. In all honesty, I can’t think of many people that started university with me, that do not regret their career choice.

So my advice to you is, if don’t know what you intend to do in terms of a career choice, discuss this with persons who have experience in the fields you are interested in. Ask for the truth, as a lot of persons in their respective careers try to make it more glorious than it really is. Another important thing is to know what you are good at, and don’t be afraid to be unconventional. Things that are considered unconventional now, will one day be considered the norm.
