A day in the life of a Bio-Medical Research Student
Have you ever seen lab-based scenes from movies which depict the life of researchers and scientists, showing how weird (for lack of a better word) they can be, having sporadic moments of frenzy and despair? Well, they couldn’t be more spot on!
During my high school’s career week, students were granted the opportunity to experience a day in the life of the profession they wanted to pursue. Well guess it’s already a given which profession my smart ass chose.
I had no idea how busy working in a lab would be. These people were fixed for the whole day around their experiments, observing, writing down their observations (while talking to themselves about the possible reasons why whatever happened, happened), and doing all kind of scientific calculations. I had no choice, I had to ask the lab supervisor about their rather strange behaviour, as I got worried at the fact that this could be me in couple years.
The supervisor told me that living this roller coaster of a life, hinged on the success of a research you have been working on every day of the year, for several years, it is inevitable to show these contrasting emotions.
The supervisor’s explanation made a lot of sense, but c’mon, this one kid was talking to a mouse the whole day! Now that’s overdoing it! I mean what was he studying, how well a mouse obeys human commands?! Dwl.
Well one things is for sure, being in a lab makes for one adventurous day, you’ll either end up scared beyond belief, or die with laughter. But all in all, my day in the life of a Bio-Medical Research student was one to treasure.
