Bases are compounds that contain the oxide (O2-) or hydroxide (OH-) ions and neutralize acids to form salt and water only.

There are both soluble and insoluble bases. Soluble bases are known as alkali’s and they produces hydroxide ions(OH-) in aqueous solution.

Properties of bases

-When soluble are called alkali’s

-React with acids to form salt and water

-Produce OH- ions when soluble in water

-pH is greater than 7

-turn moist litmus paper blue

-good conductors of electricity in aqueous solution
